About:  Case Studies

I  have provided a variety of bespoke of services to companies ranging from micro-enterprises to large public sector organisations. To give you an idea of the sort of work I do, some of the projects I’ve worked on are described below

VCS Capacity Building Seminars – Case Study

I developed and delivered a series of seminars for a local infrastructure organisation to add to their capacity building portfolio. This was aimed at voluntary and community sector organisations who wished to develop into Social Enterprises.

In consultation with the organisation and based on feedback from the clients, I developed three seminars : Quality systems, Strategy to Delivery and Stages of Project Management , and then delivered these as part of the programme. All the seminars were well attended and warmly received, with several participants signing up immediately to the next seminar in the series.

Seminar and training feedback included:

  • “Informal and open delivery – great!”
  • “A very useful and productive course”
  • “Very enjoyable – practical and clear, will recommend to others”
  • “I have really enjoyed the session and have learnt a lot…”

Impact Assessment Report – Case Study

Liverpool Primary Care Trust commissioned an Equality Impact Assessment review report from me in the autumn of 2008. Producing this report was a ten day exercise, carried out over six weeks, and involved mapping of existing smoking cessation services in Liverpool aimed at BRM groups, and gathering feedback from a selection of stakeholders .

To do this, I:

  • Analysed of a variety of existing data sources
  • Identified of relevant reports, studies and guidance
  • Undertook informal face to face interviews
  • Collated examples of good practice in smoking cessation
  • Held a consultation event with health and other professionals to feed out initial findings and inform the final report
  • Produced a final report, with recommendations, for circulation

What the client said:

“Alex produced an excellent evaluation report for us in short timescale, collecting, identifying and interpreting the salient data and background information to give us practical outcomes from the study and clear recommendations that we can implement. Alex planed and delivered a very successful consultation event, this added to the impact of the report, and was good to have a professionally facilitated session, conducted in a friendly and helpful manner. Having an outside view brought great benefit to the exercise, and we hope to work with her again in the future”

Strategy review – Case Study

When Ada House decided to review their overall strategy and business against their aims and to produce an action plan for the future, they asked Blackburne House to help. With a colleague, I arranged and facilitated a Strategy Day with management committee members and senior staff. The aim of the day was to identify opportunities available to them and focus on activities that could move the organisation forward. We built the day around several key questions for their business:

  • How well do we currently meet the mission?
  • What other options are there for our structure?
  • What do we want to do? – mission and values
  • What opportunities are there? – impact of local and regional strategies
  • What is stopping us?
  • Where should we focus our activities?
  • How can we take advantage of the opportunities?

Afterwards we produced a report summarising the decisions of the day, and an action plan to take thee decisions forward.

What the client said:

“Alex was invaluable in helping us to define a new vision and strategy for Ada House. She worked with both the Management Committee and staff, facilitating their strategy ideas and development plans for the future. The participants found the exercise very inspirational and positive, and were keen to take the plans further. The strategy development day also fostered a desire amongst the participants to become much more confident and pro-active in steering the organisation in the future. The report and the action plan that she prepared following the strategy arrived very promptly, are of a high standard, and are now helping us move towards our newly defined vision for the future of our organisation. Professional, reliable and knowledgeable, I would happily recommend her services to other small third sector organisations”
